The LRYSA is a fully inclusive charity run by volunteer instructors, with the aim to make sailing accessible to the whole community, regardless of their mental or physical abilities, age or background.
We have a strong reputation and many years’ experience of working with vulnerable young people, and we are the only RYA Sailability-accredited Centre in Leicestershire (the Royal Yachting Association’s national initiative 'enabling people with disabilities to take part in water activities regularly', which requires annual inspections for a Centre to obtain and maintain this status).
All instructors are trained to RYA standards and we rely on local funding to be able to maintain these qualifications and also the boats and equipment we need to safely offer our services at a very low cost or often free to our vulnerable groups. Our students range from the age of eight to 80, with many having a disability; for example partially sighted, partially deaf, suffering depression / emotionally autistic and high-functioning autism, severely disabled adults and young carers.
