'Sport creating positive change': Nominations now open for Awards

Nominations are being invited for the London Sport Awards, which recognise how sport, physical activity and sport for development are being used every day across the capital to strengthen communities and improve the lives of individuals in need.

There are 10 categories spanning health and wellbeing, volunteering and inspirational young people. The ‘Uniting London Award’ will recognise how sport is being used to drive community cohesion, and the ‘Community Impact Award’ will go to an organisation or individual that is able to provide strong evidence of the benefits of their interventions.

Because of the pandemic the 2021 Awards, which take place in December, will celebrate the efforts of volunteers, organisations, physical activity and sport projects across the capital over the last 18 months.

SIGNIFICANT

London Sport CEO Tove Okunniwa told ConnectSport: “Physical activity and sport has the power to change lives for the better through physical health, mental wellbeing and social inclusion, to tackling crime, unemployment, and addressing inequality.

“The London Sport Awards recognises the incredible people and organisations in London who use physical activity and sport to create significant positive change on the streets of our capital.

“That’s why the Awards’ categories are so diverse, there’s so much going on day to day and we want to recognise the very best volunteers, young people, businesses, charities and community clubs.”

IMPACT

The Lord Mayor of London, William Russell, added: “The importance of sport and physical activity for people’s physical and mental health has been thrown into sharp focus during the long months of lockdown during the pandemic.

“Businesses play a vital role in allowing these kind of projects to exist, and I would encourage anyone who knows of a company which has made a real impact on helping local communities to get active to nominate it for this award.”

People can also nominate their own business or others, if they have supported community sport or physical activity in a particular area of London between January 1st,  2020 and June 30th, 2021.

Nominations for the awards should be made before 5pm on Thursday 15th July.
