The inaugural Muslim Sports Awards were held this week at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.

Winners included Yashmin Harun, founder and Chair of Muslimah Sports Association, and Ali Abdi, community and partnerships manager for the University of Cardiff and Cricket Wales, were named female and male sports personalities of the year respectively.

Active Inclusion Network (pictured above) was community initiative of the year, and Sähëlï Hub picked up its fourth award in recent months after being named organisation of the year.

Great Britain rugby sevens star Kaleem Barreto, who was nominated in the men's elite sport category, commented: "It’s hard to put into words how special it was to be part of such a groundbreaking event - celebrating an under-represented community in sport. It was a night of great food, even better company, and a lot of laughs."

The Awards, which are co-ordinated by the Muslim Sports Foundation, aim to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the Muslim community from grassroots and community level, right through to professional sporting talent, and the stakeholders working hard behind the scenes.
