Encouraging and employing diverse talent can “bring about new ideas, energy and insight to any business” according to the Chief Executive of a leading sports apprenticeship charity.
Gary Laybourne, CEO of Coach Core, was speaking as the charity launched its annual Impact Report showcasing the positive impact it has made on people, organisations and communities over the last year.
In that time Coach Core supported 191 young people to make significant steps into the workforce through its sports-focused apprenticeship programme. 57% of Coach Core's apprentices have additional learning support needs and 27% started with no qualifications in maths or English - highlighting how the organisation works with those who most need the opportunity. Furthermore 74% of Coach Core apprentices graduate, which is 21% higher than the national average.
INSPIRATION
Gary said: “The sport and physical activity sector continues to offer inspiration and positivity. Coach Core apprentices are no exception, proving time and again that diverse talent can bring about new ideas, energy and insight to any business, and that their relatability and positive influence can change their local communities for the better.” He added: “We will continue to champion the multiple benefits that apprentices can bring to society.”
Coach Core’s success is made possible due to the organisations that work closely with it to bring on an apprentice, with the charity providing support to 60 employers in starting apprenticeships.
One of those is Bradford Bulls Foundation, the charitable arm of Bradford Bulls Rugby League Club. A spokesperson for the Foundation commented: “Coach Core’s tailored information, advice and guidance have been invaluable in helping us re-establish a successful apprenticeship programme. Their hands-on support, from the initial set-up to ongoing navigation of funding and administration, has made all the difference.”
BARRIERS
Laura Larsson, Coach Core’s Research and Impact Manager, added: “Too many young people face barriers to education and employment, not because they lack talent, but because opportunity isn’t accessible to them. At Coach Core Foundation, we challenge that reality by equipping under-represented young people with the skills, confidence, and experience to build meaningful careers.
“Our mission is to enable under-represented young people to access inclusive sports apprenticeships, transforming their lives and the communities around them. The stories within [the annual report’s] pages highlight the power of apprenticeships to unlock potential, drive social mobility, and create a ripple effect of positive change. This report is both a reflection of what we’ve achieved and an insight into what’s next. With continued collaboration and investment, we can break cycles of disadvantage and ensure the next generation has the support they need to succeed.”
