Hurdles2Hoops CIC
Working with asylum-seekers and refugees offering free physical activity and education sessions in London Boroughs

Hurdles2Hoops is an innovative non-profit programme that uses the power of physical activity to provide opportunity and build community. The programme offers a menu of socially and personally-enriching activities, tailored to the diverse interests of participants, including basketball, boxing, badminton and much more.

Hurdles2Hoops focuses on developing the resilience and confidence of its participants, fusing a warm, beginner-friendly environment with the opportunity for high-level sporting development, facilitated by coaches often with elite sporting backgrounds themselves. Its Managing Director, Charlotte Thomas-Rowe, is emblematic of this culture: as a professional basketball player, she is driven by her own experiences in sport to offer the same sense of belief, opportunity, and belonging that shaped her journey. Through her leadership, the organisation not only nurtures athletic potential but also instils the self-assurance and determination that extend far beyond the court, gym, or art studio.

Hurdles2Hoops partners closely with the city of Westminster council and their ‘active Westminster’ initiative,  though their work also expands into nearby boroughs. Their array of activities goes beyond just sporting opportunity, also offering options like art classes and computer skills workshops,. The organisation is very conscious of appealing to demographics that may face ‘hurdles’ to activity participation, empowering  participants to overcome barriers and move confidently towards healthier, more positive futures.
