Finding Your Feet with Parkinson's
A collaborative programme developed by the University of Wolverhampton and British Judo, supported by Parkinson's UK

Finding Your Feet with Parkinson’s is a collaborative programme delivered by the University of Wolverhampton and British Judo, with initial funding support from Parkinson's UK. Based on British Judo’s Finding your Feet programme originally designed to teach safer falling techniques to older adults. The Finding Your Feet with Parkinson’s initiative is designed to support people living with Parkinson’s through structured physical activity rooted in adapted judo techniques. By combining academic research with sport-specific expertise, the programme offers an innovative approach to improving balance, mobility, and overall wellbeing.

Participants engage in tailored sessions that focus on gentle movement, coordination, and controlled falling techniques, which are essential skills for reducing injury risk. Beyond physical benefits, Finding Your Feet fosters a sense of community, helping individuals build confidence and social connections in a supportive environment. The involvement of trained coaches and researchers ensures that the programme remains safe, evidence-based, and responsive to participants’ needs.

A key strength of the programme lies in its interdisciplinary nature, merging sports science, healthcare insight, and lived experience. This collaboration not only enhances the quality of delivery but also contributes to ongoing research into non-pharmacological interventions for Parkinson’s. Ultimately, Finding Your Feet demonstrates how partnerships between universities, sports organisations and charities can create meaningful, life-enhancing opportunities for people managing long-term conditions.
