The Rugby Football League (RFL) has launched the RFL Community Trust and staged its first ‘Week of Social Impact’.
The new Trust is dedicated to furthering the sport’s social impact goals, working with the governing gody and the charitable foundations of rugby league clubs.
It was officially launched at the opening match of England’s Test series against Samoa in Wigan, with the foundations sharing the impact of their projects and programmes throughout the week using the hashtags #OuRLeagueLife and #LeagueByImpact.
Ashleigh Seddon, Social Impact Manager at the RFL, explained: “Rugby League has always been more than just a sport - it’s a lifeline for our communities.
“From its origins in 1895, the sport has prioritised the wellbeing of those who support it, with the launch of the Community Trust and our dedicated Social Impact Week we’re enhancing our commitment to make a tangible difference in the lives of people across our regions.”
In 2022 the RFL introduced a dedicated Social Impact Team proactively working towards a series of strategic aims which include:
Removing the barriers and tackling the inequalities that communities face. Focusing on health and wellbeing, and education and employability to increase social mobility.
Welcoming more players to the sport. Promoting inclusivity and diversity, and ensuring social justice.
Strengthening the community game through sustainable facilities, supporting volunteers and achieving social cohesion.
RFL Director of Development Marc Lovering added: “The Community Trust isn’t just about supporting our sport; it’s about leveraging the power of Rugby League to create lasting, positive change in society. We’re committed to working with our communities to deliver on that promise.”
To support the launch, a compelling video was shared which highlights the various social impact initiatives. Watch the video here.
